Challenging convention
Marco is a trusted European provider of legacy solutions to the non-life insurance and reinsurance market. Our senior management team and Board are highly experienced in both legacy and live insurance business. We are passionate about creating innovative and flexible capital and risk management solutions that create value for our clients and protect their reputations. With access to substantial long-term capital, deployed responsibly from a risk and returns perspective, Marco’s commercial edge reflects the calibre and experience of its management and Board, the priority given to serve the needs of its clients as well as other crucial aspects of its corporate culture, and the quality of its balance sheet. Headquartered in Malta, Marco has 3 carrier platforms: EU licensed carrier - Marco Insurance PCC Limited; UK legacy platform - British Reserve Insurance Company Limited; and Lloyd’s - RITC Syndicate 1254. In addition, Marco owns Humboldt Re, which is currently being run-off in Guernsey. Complementary to P&C legacy, Marco owns Polo, the leading Lloyd’s and London Market outsourced insurance service provider, and Turnkey Managing Agency (www.polo.works). The Marco Group comprises more than 300 specialist insurance professionals spanning legacy and insurance services.
Management team
Marco’s highly accomplished and experienced professionals have completed over 40 run-off transactions with aggregate value in excess of €5bn - mostly as buyers of reserves and entities, but also as sellers. They have featured as key members of management teams of live re/insurers and legacy businesses and have gained approval from numerous Regulators - including PRA/FCA, Lloyd’s, MFSA, BaFin, GFSC - for multiple transactions.  

Simon Minshall

CEO

Simon is Marco’s founder and CEO. He has over 25 years’ experience in re/insurance. He was a leading member of the management team that established Endurance’s international businesses. Before founding Marco, Simon was Group CFO at a specialist European P&C insurance run-off consolidator. Simon’s background in finance and management in re/insurance together with his entrepreneurial flair provides Marco with critical elements of its unique character and competitive edge.

Zsolt Szalkai, CFA

MD - Head of M&A

Zsolt is Marco’s Head of M&A. Over the past 15 years Zsolt has closed more than 30 legacy transactions representing >€2bn reserves. Zsolt is recognised as a pioneer of the modern European P&C run-off industry. Before joining Marco, Zsolt led the set-up of another international run-off player’s European and Lloyd’s presence, successfully completing three transactions within Lloyd’s with a cumulative volume of approximately £1.2bn claims reserves.

Jonathan Walker

Origination

Jonathan leads Marco’s Origination initiatives, focusing on (new) client relationships and transaction opportunities. He is a former re/insurance investment banker and advised on more than $25bn cross-border re/insurance M&A and capital markets transactions over 25 years, having started his career as a European insurance equity research analyst.

Simon Minshall

CEO

Simon is Marco’s founder and CEO. He has over 25 years’ experience in re/insurance. He was a leading member of the management team that established Endurance’s international businesses. Before founding Marco, Simon was Group CFO at a specialist European P&C insurance run-off consolidator. Phil Rooke

Chief Financial Officer

Phil is Marco’s Group CFO. He joined Marco from Sompo International (previously Endurance) where he was International Group CFO. Phil has a wide range of senior financial management experience across a variety of businesses mainly in live re/insurance, but also in legacy and captive management.

Dieter, an actuary, is Marco’s Chairman. His last executive position was Group CFO of Allianz. Beforehand, he was Group CFO of Zurich. Dieter’s extensive experience includes CEO/Board Member responsible for European insurance businesses both at Allianz and Zurich. While Group CFO of both insurers he led the sale of substantial run-off portfolios. Dieter currently serves on several boards including UBS.

Rolf Tolle

Rolf’s long career in re/insurance includes his very high profile role as Lloyd’s of London’s first Franchise Board Director during the market’s existential challenges from 9/11 and US APH. Rolf is a former reinsurance CEO and CUO and currently serves as an NED for QBE.

Dr. Monika Sebold-Bender

Monika is an actuary who has served on German management boards of all leading European insurance groups. She was Head of P&C underwriting globally for Allianz and her most recent executive role was Board Member responsible for P&C at Ergo Group. Monika serves on the European Board of a leading international Japanese re/insurance group.

Paul has extensive experience in re/insurance. Over the years he has worked as a reinsurance broker, Director of commercial lines for a primary carrier, run-off manager and Managing Director of a European run-off business. Paul currently serves on several Boards as NED.
